Wow. Last night I watched as the Packer first team scored on every possession in the first half. Save for one missed field goal, I think. They took it to a team that made it to the Superbowl last year. A team with a pretty good offense of their own, and a respectable defense. It was preseason, but it was fun to watch. A few observations.
Brent who?
Grant looks to be back in form. He made some great runs off some great cutbacks. This is good.
Finley . . . holy smokes! Bubba who?
Jennings is clearly the stand out receiver on the team. But, the Packers have got to have the best core of receivers in the league. WIth Jordy stepping up, Finley making plays, Jones coming around . . . Rodgers will have no shortage of people who can catch the ball.
Defensively . . . there's some work that needs to be done. But, talk about going after the ball! I'm very confident this new scheme will work out for them. Plus, going in to this season, what films can other teams watch on the Packers defense? None. The Packers may be new at it, but other teams aren't going to know how to read it at first, either.
This team is now a fast break team. THey're the type of team, I think, that can wear out defenses. Hard to say what's going to happen . . . I'm not making my prediction yet . . . but the Packers look like they can play aggressively for 6 quarters. Which could cause some problems for teams with "older" players.
This could be a fun season.

Brett Favre
Here we go again. First, no one seems to know for sure exactly what's going on so I think we should all chill. But, I have two thoughts.
First, if you didn't believe what an attention whoring jerkwad he can be, do you believe it now? What more do you need? The guy needs medication!
Second, who cares if he plays for the Vikings. Did you watch his season with the Jets? Maybe he's got something left, but likely not. I can't imagine with all the Viqueens have invested in Tarvaris Jackson that they'd be willing to bring Brett in . . . even as a backup. But, the Viqueens have been known to make momumentally stupid decisions.
Clearly Brett has no regard for the rest of the Packer organization . . . or his fans.
All of this gets the big . . . whatever.

Brett Favre . . . I told you so.
OK. This is old. But, I'm finally getting around to a few topics I've been wanting to comment on. And Brett's one of them.
Remember, Brett told Greta he had just retired too early. And that when he tried to engage in talks with the Packers all he heard were crickets. That wasn't true, of course, and the drama ensued.
Seems now, everything the Packers said was true, and it was Brett who was doing the lying. All because of his ego.
Brett wanted Moss badly. What a nice statement that is to Driver, Jennings, and Franks . . . and others. Not only that, but he put himself above the team thinking he knew better than anyone else what the Packers should do.
As did his shenanigans throughout the process. Brett didn't give one rip about Aaron Rodgers. It was all about what Brett wanted. A spoiled little boy throwing a tantrum.
Finally, what a nice slap in the face to the Jets. "Well, I just went out with you so I could make my old girlfriend jealous."
Trying to stick it to Ted and all he managed to do was waste a season for the Jets, and severely tarnish his reputation. He could have gone out a hero. A true legend. Now he'll be forever remembered as a Diva. Spoiled, self absorbed, selfish, and thinking he could do it all.
Nice season, Brett.
Well, I told you so. I said Brett had no intention of playing for the Packers this past season. That he was doing everything he could to essentially be fired so he could do what he wanted. The Packers played their hand perfectly.
You lost, Brett. In a big way.
"Part of me coming back last year, I have to admit now, was sticking it to Ted (Thompson),''

Dom Capers
So, he's the new guy that going to bring about cha . . . OK, I hate that word now. Hop . . . no. Something new! Or, something better than it was before! Let's go with that.
There's already bellyaching about him. All of it has to do with the fact that he much prefers, and will likely run, a 3-4 defense as opposed to the 4-3 defense the Packers are running now. Much of the bellyaching has to do with the fact that we don't have the personnel for a 3-4 defense, that the scheme isn't a good fit for our players, and that it's simply another thing that will be "new" for next season. All legitimate complaints, I suppose. I think we're missing something, though . . .
THE PACKER'S DEFENSE SUCKS!
(ahem)
Get my point? Have I made myself clear? We can't get much worse.
Next season we'll get Jenkins, Barnett, and Bigby back healthy. We'd still need someone in the middle. And, in spite of what I said earlier . . . not knowing at the time about Capers coming in . . . maybe we could use Peppers. If we have Barnett, Chillar, Popinga, and Hawk as our backers, I'm not feeling so bad. Maybe Kampman is a little under sized. Start getting him beefed up. Look for a middle guy and sign Peppers.
Face it, the old scheme wasn't working. A cha . . . new dir . . . fresh approach might be just what we need.

If I Were Coach
I'd have the Packers drilling fumble recovery 8 hours straight, including Rodgers, with one goal . . . fall on the ball. I'd fire a hail of bullets above the ball to keep everyone down and resist any temptation at all to pick up the ball while running.

Aaron Rodgers
Much is being said about Aaron Rodgers by all the ESPN news teams prior to the game. All of it good, too. In fact, Chris Berman seemed to think that the Packers might be the second best team in the league, in spite of their record. All due to potential, of course, and the fact that on paper the Packers are better than their record.
One thing is clear, Aaron has proved himself. He's poised, moves well, reads the defense well, make good decisions, and has a great arm. He may never have the numbers Brett does but that's because he doesn't do the same goofy things. Aaron is ranked 6th in the league. He certainly doesn't play like a first year quarterback.
Anyhoo, always nice to hear good things about your team by the commentators.

AJ Hawk the reason Packers won?
The Packers anhialating the Bears raises some questions about the team. The Vikings ran all over us, we couldn't generate any offense, and we lost the game. Are the Bears that much different from the VIkings?
One thing that's different is that Hawk played middle linebacker for the Bears game. Chillar took his outside position. This worked out very well. First, Hawk might be better in the middle as he's a smart player, a sure tackler, and great against the run. His weakness has always been coverage. Chillar is faster, thus better at coverage. He played a great game. Though, we wasn't going up against a Whitton or Gonzales.
This is no knock on Barnett. But, it will be interesting to see how the defense plays the rest of the season now that Nick is out.

Packers vs Vikings
A 52 yard field away from winning. Doesn't matter who the kicker is, that's not a high percentage kick. It was close. Within 2 yards. But, as we know, close only counts with dirty bombs, horse shoes, and silent but deadlies. Sure, Crosby should have made the kick. More than that, though, McCarthy should have put his Magic 8 Ball away and called some real plays. How about that running game, Mike? Maybe you should do something to slow that rush, Mike. Rodgers was hit more often than Paris Hilton, pressured more than Kirstie Ally on a new diet plan. Rodgers was the side beef for the front four Balboa's of the Viqueens. What happened? In the first game we didn't hear Allen's name at all. This game, his name was called more than Lindsay Lohan's at the clinic. If you were like me, you'd be smart and wonderful, and you'd be wondering where the defense went. Some where along the way the defense had a Southwest Airlines moment. You know, "want to get away?" Well, they did go away. Some place in their minds quiet and warm. Not purple. The defensive line needed some Tim Allen strength gap spackle mixed in with a little Emeril BAM! Instead, they were playing a bad game of Red Rover with Petersen. Mean while, Nick Barnett is wearing a t shirt that reads: I Went to the Metrodome and all I Got Was his Lousy Torn ACL". Out for the season. Great. The sieve sprung a leak.
It makes sense.
One good thing, we can finally lay to rest the China Doll stuff about Rodgers. I'll see your broken pinky and raise you a separated shoulder. I win. Rodgers is the man.
In the end, I blame this one on McCarthy. A coach is supposed to study films of the other teams. Learn it's strengths. Exploit it's weaknesses. Hey, Mike . . . we're the team in green and gold.
Still, in spite of Petersen gaining almost 200 yards, we were 6 feet away from winning. In any other game, a team would win 52 to nothing with that kind of stat. Let's face it, Frerotte blows. He blows chunks. We can thank him for keeping the game as close as it was.
Still, I'm throwing away my purple crayons.

Benedict Brett?
Cornerback Charles Woodson says that if a media report indicating that Brett Favre shared inside knowledge of the Green Bay Packers' offense with Detroit Lions coaches is true, it's nothing short of sabotage.
The whole article.
I can't imagine this is true. But, if it is . . . what will the Favre fanatics say now?

Packers vs Buccaneers
Ugh.
I should just stop right there, but like picking a scab I can't help myself.
They should have won. I don't like to take away from another team, the coaches, and the scheme. But the Packers should have won this game. For the first time this season, they looked bad . . . on various levels.
First, two of Aaron's interceptions were not his fault. Over all, I thought he played pretty well . . . at least as much as McCarthy allowed him to play! Which is my biggest gripe . . . what was with the play calling?!?! This was the most aggravating game so far. What happened to rotating Grant and Jackson? Grant looked lost. He couldn't have found open field in Nebraska.
Thankfully, the defense played pretty well. Still, when the ball comes your way, you have to make the catch. Williams held his own.
Penalties. The day will come when there's a backlash against bad calls. We're close this year. I don't know what to do about it, though.
Anyway, I blame this loss on McCarthy. His insistence on running on EVERY first down was aggravating. Plus, his insistence on running plays that weren't working . . . at all . . . was stupid. I'll be interested to read his post game press conference.
The biggest thing, though, Aaron might have suffered a separated shoulder. Since he seemed to play after it happened, it may not be too bad. There are degrees. Hopefully, there are no tears. Still, I can't imagine he'll start next week. They host the Falcons. While a very win-able game, they need Rodgers.
Now, don't even start with the "made of glass" stuff about Rodgers. I feel he's proven to be a tough guy, able to take a hit. I've seen a lot of players hit the ground the way he did and wind up with the same injury. I think the fact that he played on with what had to have been considerable pain is testament to his toughness.
A hard loss, no question. When I feel aggravated like this, I turn to the other games and consider . . . better than being a Cowboys fan.

Packers vs Cowboys
I just watched a replay of the game. Over all, I thought the Packers did pretty well. Held up well against a good team . . . one that's expected to take the NFC. A few things go our way and it might have been a different outcome.
First, I guess I can't go a week without mentioning Aaron. Again, he did good.
You know, I like James Jones, he seems to have some talent, but he's gotta catch the ball! He has a lot of drops so far this year.
Jennings is wicked good. Number one in receiving yards . . . in the entire league!
I like the tandem of Jackson/Grant. It keeps the running game pounding with fresh feet every so often.
I said this at the begining of the year, for the Packers to have any success, they can't spare bodies . . . particularly on defense. We need Harris, Collins, and Bigby. Harris could be done for the season.
You'll recall, during pre-season, the Packers were blitzing a lot. What happened?
Packers go to Tampa Bay. A win-able game but wiley old quaterbacks always make me nervous. Griese played well, and the Bucs have a good defense. While I expected the Packer to lose against the Cowboys (in spite of my picks) I expect the Pack to beat the Bucs.

Packers vs Lions
Wow. What a difference a minute can make.
No matter how hard core nuts you are about Favre, you have to be impressed with Rodgers. He played extremely well today. Accurate. Composed.
Credit the Lions for making it a bit of a game there . . . for a minute. I blame McCarthy for much of the stagnant third quarter. No question the Lions had made some adjustments. But, the conservative play calling was all Mike.
What I liked about Aaron's performance is how well he spread the ball around. He hit 7 different receivers including a touchdown to the rookie Gordy Nelson. Nice.
Defense played well. We held the Lions to 49 yards rushing. We let Johnson get away from us a couple of times. Over all, though, holding the Lions to 25 points isn't bad. 5 sacks. Two by AJ.
Kampman, KGB. AJ, Barnette. It's going to be a broken record.
Obviously, Woodson made up for the blown coverage. Though, you can't win them all.
The Bears and Vikings both lost after being up in their games. This puts the Pack solely in first place.
Cowboys are next.
UPDATE: Rodgers is number 4 this week with passing yards. Jennings, number one!

Are You Ready For Some Football!
First off . . .
BWAA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!
EAT CHEESE, PURPLE PISSHEADS!
(ahem)
Yes, I realize I often scold such behavior as childish, rude, and un-sportsman-like.
Tough. It's the trash talking, spend millions to beat the Packers, think they're just gonna walk in and beat us Viqueens.
OWNED! 0 and 5!
How many times did we hear Jared Allens name?
Zip. Nada. Zero. None. Not at all.
We blew a hole in their line so big, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell could have run through it hand in hand.
OK. It was ugly. The penalties! Crimeny! Especially to have such a beautiful touchdown called back. Laps and push ups, guys. Laps and push ups.
While I thought McCarthy called a pretty good game over all, not throwing a pass on first down on their second to last possession was playing to lose. Also, if you're going to throw a quick out to a receiver, bring someone in motion to take the DB out!
Rodgers had a good game. 18/22 for 178 yards. No interceptions, a great toss for a touchdown, no sacks, and s few nice runs. He never once looked like a rookie. I thought he handled the game very well.
Barnett, Hawk, and Popinga. You're gonna hear a lot from these guys. Maybe the best linebacking trio in football.
Bigby. Go to the board and write: "I will not try and make a play when the game is won" 100,000 times.
Frost did a good job. a 50 yarder and one that landed inside the 20. Can't ask for much more.
Finally, no injuries. We live to play another game. Next up, we go to Detroilet to play the Lions.

Packer vs Denver
I don't put a lot of stock in pre-season, but I've got a few thoughts so far.
Aaron Rodgers looks good. He's no Favre. But, he's got a good arm and is pretty accurate. He's also not made of glass which is something many people were afraid of. Looks like he'll last the season. He's taken some solid hits.
I was encouraged by yesterday's game. I thought the Packers played with a good amount of intensity on both side of the ball.
One thing is certain, though. They need to stay healthy. The Packers can ill afford too many losses to injury. Particularly on both lines.
We continue to have quite the stable of runners and receivers. We now seem to be flush with linebackers.
The kickers are doing well. A 71 yard punt? Nice.
As for the rest of the division . . . Detroit looks good. They may well win the division. The Viqueens look average. The Bears suck.
I'm really surprised Lovie and Rex are still there.
Go Pack!
BTW, The Jets face the Giants tonight. Let's see how they do with the pass rush.

More on Favre
I posted a quick post before as I was at work, so let me add a few things.
People . . . get over it. Yes, I understand that as fans we pay good money to support the team through ticket sales and whatever. But, c'mon. It's a game. I'm a fan, I've got some opinions about it, but geez. Flying a Packer flag at half mast?
Yow.
A couple of things "hit me" listening to all the press conferences. One thing in particular. I don't think Brett wanted to come back to the Packers. At least, not on any terms set forth by the organization. I think he's got a bug up his butt about Thompson and he decided he can't play on a team with Ted as the GM. Now, you can blame Ted for some of this. But, I really think there's a prima donna attitude by Brett that can't be ignored. His notes to ESPN, his reluctance to commit earlier in the year, and his denial of consideration for Moss and Mariucci all, to me, add up to a guy who thought himself way more important than what he was.
Two, I honestly believe the Packers simply didn't want Brett back. Everything that has been said is just a cover for them wanting him to just go away. I think they felt Brett had become difficult and they didn't want to deal with it anymore. This was good timing as not only did Brett really, really announce his retirement, but also, he's old. There are good reasons to think he's not going to be as good as last year.
Sure, Ted is taking a risk. I don't know that it's a huge risk. The Jets? They were one of the worst teams in football last year. I'll be shocked if Brett does well. I hope he does. But I don't think he will.
As for Aaron, I feel bad for him. He's done nothing wrong yet he'll be the trigger for the boos that come from the fans when the Packers play. I don't know how he'll do. We haven't seen enough of him. For some, that's reason enough to think we'll stink, or that we'd be a better team with Brett. Give the guy a chance. If the season does go south and Aaron sucks, all that will mean is that Aaron sucks. Nothing else. It won't mean we should have kept Favre. It won't mean Ted's an idiot. It will just mean Aaron sucks.
As I've said elsewhere, Brett has only a couple of years in him. He's going to retire. We're better off with Aaron having played with Favre than someone else. I know Ted hasn't really used free agency and I've often wondered why. But, who would you get? Who would be better than starting Aaron right now?
There isn't anyone. Give Aaron a chance. Back him. Back the team.
UPDATE!

There are two things that have been glossed over, so to speak. One, Deanna's involvement in this. Now, I'm not going to blame her but one has to believe she has some part in all of this. Maybe it's supportive. Maybe not.
Two, Brett's physical. I've only heard a mention of some problems.
Maybe Thompson is an idiot. I doubt it. I do think there are two sides to this and Brett may not be the angel many think he is.
People . . . get over it.
UPDATE!

Favre a Jet?
Well, for our part, it's over. Time to rally around Aaron and the rest of the team. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for Favre in NY. Much different fans . . . much different press. Brett may find it rather hostile. Particularly if he doesn't do well.
I wonder if he'll pull the same "retirement" crap with them?
Anyway, some are making predictions, here are mine:
Packers: 10 - 6 and they'll win the division. Aaron will have a good season though rushing will rule the offense. They will make the playoffs, of course, but won't be in the Superbowl.
The Jets have an easy schedule based on their place last year. Favre will struggle. The Jets will go 7 and 9 and Favre will call it quits for good.
McCarthy will most certainly survive this. Ted will likely, as well. It'd be nice if his drafts, particularly Jordy, have an impact this season. Given that Favre won't do well, the call for Ted's head will diminish by season's end.
I reserve the right to change these predictions at the end of preseason.

Almost positive for sure Brett might be absolutely gone
I watched McCarthy's press conference. A couple of thoughts.
He seemed very forthright, and I'm impressed by that. If he was faking it, he did a good job. Yes, he seemed a bit annoyed having to deal, once again, with the whole retirement thing. But, can you blame him? He's the coach. He's got 79 other players to contend with. Some as vital as Favre once was to the success of the team. They cannot be ignored. They cannot be diminished in their contributions. While I can go both ways with Favre, one thing I've maintained is that no one is above the team. If Brett is driven by his desires as a player, then McCarthy is driven by his desires to coach a winning football team.
While I'm sure he'll never admit it, this whole Favre thing must drive him nuts. Again, I can't blame him.
But, he's not to blame for anything. He's not the GM, the owner, or the team president. He doesn't own the building, run the restaurant, or cook the food. He just serves it.
While we can debate how it is we got to this point, why we got to this point, and who's fault it is, I thought Mike asked the perfect question. Is your (Brett's) mind in the right place to play for Green Bay? Absolutely perfect. I can imagine it was a very difficult question to answer given where we are. As I said, Mike has 79 other players to deal with. If Brett is on board, then he'd better be on board. I think the question really gave Brett a chance to evaluate the whole situation. What he's doing to Mike. What he's doing to Aaron. What he's doing to the team. What he's doing to himself. Expectations would be extremely high with his return. I know there are many who blindly believe that Brett would take us to Zion and beyond. For others, he'd be under a HUGE microscope. The press would be brutal. With every loss, every interception, every fumble, questions would arise.
I feel mistakes were made on both sides. What drives me nuts is that people think Brett is god yet think Ted is shit. That's simply not consistent. I think it was wrong for Brett to think he could simply walk back in as if nothing happened, I think it was wrong for Brett to continuously use releases to Mortensen instead of speaking himself, and I think it was wrong for Brett to draw a line in the sand. As for Ted, I think he spoke of things too soon without fully evaluating the situation. I really don't blame the Packers for not wanting Brett back. I believe they believe they need to move on and have worked hard in that direction.
Would they be better off with Brett? I don't care what anyone says. It's all speculation. I don't know. No one knows for sure. And it looks like we'll never know.
What I do know . . . I wish Brett well. I highly doubt he'll take whatever team he plays for to the Superbowl. I do hope he has a good season and stays unhurt. I wish the same for Aaron. While I love Brett, I'm a Packer fan first.

Packer's Public Proprietorship
Something I think we forget . . . the Packers are publicly owned. JSonline is reporting a meeting of shareholders next Thursday.
That could be trouble. I don't know which way . . . but it could be a problem.
Then, just to add to the drama (you can't write this stuff!) the Vikings are being accused of contract tampering!
My, what a tangled football seam we weave!
