Idol Chatter

Main Entry: in·jus·tice
Pronunciation: \(ˌ)in-ˈjəs-təs\
Function: noun
1 : absence of justice : violation of right or of the rights of another : unfairness
2 : an unjust act : wrong

The last word says it all . . . WRONG. As I told my wife and tweeted, Kris did a good job on last night's show. Probably the best performance he's had. Ever. Still, while he might have kicked 2 field goals from 55 yards out, Danny and Adam kicked two field goals from 75 yards out.

Give me a break. The vocal talents that both Danny and Adam posses are FAR grater than that of Kris'. Kris is ok. Very middle of the road. Very boring. There's no compelling reason to listen to him sing a second song. He has no stage personality what so ever. Maybe he'd make a good bluesy folk singer. Think the tweens that make up his fan base are going to buy that CD?

I don't think so.

There's no question Adam is a vocal force. It's uncanny how he sings. Plus, he's got stage personality. Almost to a point of over load. Still, he's a freak. He has vocal ability like Ian Gillan. The likes of which Idol has never seen before. He's sure to win.

But, Danny . . . he had the most natural cool of them all. Allison had it, too. Something about the way they sing, the way they sound, it exposes them. Danny's rendition of You Are So Beautiful gave me goosebumps. It was perfect. Absolutely perfect.

The other day I came across a celebrity site that had some vote on American Idol. I voted for Danny. I got quite a surprise when I got the results. Over 35,000 people had voted. Adam had 15k, Kris 12k and Danny 8k. A distant third.

Turns out the sampling was accurate.

Clearly everyone thought it would be Danny and Adam in the final. I sure did. Unfortunately, this isn't about actual talent anymore.

One can never under estimate the power of the tween vote.

Congratulations, Danny. You sure made me proud! Hopefully we'll hear more from you in the future.

First, I'm glad to be done with that wannabe ass cloth Jamie Foxx. His performance sucked. What makes him an expert?

Anyway . . .

Rock isn't Kris' thing. He didn't suck, but he wasn't that good either. Clearly not in the same class as the rest.

Adam is effortless with his singing. His problem, though, is his phrasing. He was a little too smooth and polished tonight. He needed to rough it up a bit. Plus, his movements seems a bit contrived.

Danny did much better than the judges gave him credit for. I honestly don't know what goes through their minds at times. His voice is very compelling. The song choice was one where you couldn't wait to hear how he handled the end . . . which he did extremely well. A little rough on the first note, but spot on on the others. For Simon to criticize the scream at the end . . . THAT'S HOW IT ENDS, DOOFUS!

Then . . . Allison. Jinkies! Again, what the judges were thinking . . . ? I'm starting to think it's an Adam conspiracy. Allison did great!! Such a natural talent with her voice, her expression, and her moves. While I know of one person who will disagree, she ruled the night.

The duets were cool. Kris wasn't in the same league as Danny, and Adam and Allison did great on their song.

Who goes home? Kris. If there's a second person in the bottom, I don't know. I want to say Adam but the coolness of his song may keep Adam out. Danny hasn't been in the bottom and performed well enough to stay. But does Simon carry any weight? Does Allison have enough supporters to keep her in?

Whatever. Kris goes home.

Well, here's a first . . . no one really stunk last night. I think it's going to be a popularity contest vote. So, who goes home? Is Simon right? Allison? That would suck. I thought she did a great job. But, what about the fan base? Is hers as strong as Kris'?

Based on last night's performance, I would have a hard time picking someone to go. I'll be very disappointed if it's Allison. I'd prefer Matt or Kris to go, but . . .

I don't have a good feeling about this.

The top 9. I'm still reeling a bit from Alexsis' departure. But, I'll try and carry on.

Anoop. Nice. Safe. Boring. Did anyone see American Dreamz?

Allison. I liked what she wore. Being as young as she is, I thought she got away with it. It wasn't overly provocative. Just bright and fun. Her vocals, for such a young person, are amazing. She did, and looked, great.

Danny. I'll predict right now that he will win. Flawless performance.

Adam. The only thing he has to watch is over singing something. He's got a range like an Ian Gillan.. He just has to learn good decisions with his voice. That being said, he did great.

Lil. Going down hill . . . and fast. Bad song choice, pitch problems, and a bit bombastic. She'll be one of the bottom.

Matt. See Lil.

Scott. The judges surprised me. They all really liked his performance. I thought he had major pitch problems. Good voice, so-so interpretation, kind of boring. He may be in the bottom as well.

Megan. (Sigh) She's likely gone. SImon was dead on. What makes her unique actually got irritating. Bad, bad, bad song choice.

Kris. A really good performance. Paula was actually insightful this time when she said he took a 30 year old song, made it his, and turned it into something for today. As though we're all hearing it for the first time. I haven't been impressed with Kris . . . up till now. Great job.

Danny still ruled the night. Megan goes home.

Idol Finals

Finally. I've said it before, they want to increase viewership, shorten the show. A lot of wasted time. Thank heavens for the DVR.
Also, I like Kara as a judge. She makes sense and she's intelligible. Paula can be shown the door after this season. No one would miss her.

So, I just watched the Mike Jackson performances. Here are my thoughts:

Anoop, Jorger, Scott, Matt, and Jasmine . . . boring. Good, not great. They could all make good broadway singers, but that's about it.

Megan. I'm on the fence. She has a unique voice. But her choice of Rockin Robin was horrendous. She looked goofy.

Lil sounded good . . . really good. Not sure if she can win the public over, and I hated what she had on, but she did a good job.

Allison. I have to remind myself this girl is just 16. She's got some soul in her voice. She needs time, really. But there's real potential there.

Kris . . . I don't know. I don't think he's all that, but everyone seems to like him. I'm still waiting for that performance.

Adam. This boy has it. He'll be in the final.

Alexis. This girl has it. She'll be in the final.

Danny. Wow. He blew me away. I hadn't been too impressed up until tonight. He sounded awesome! He'll be in the final.

This week should be interesting . . . country music theme. I don't see country in any of them. SOng choice will be critical.

Idol chatter

There is no greater annoyance on this planet than Tatiana. I'm sure she was voted back in just so we could all watch her cry and make a complete ass of herself. Such a self indulgent twit, Like nails on a blackboard, she grated on my nerves. Good singer, not great. Pleasant looking, not a babe. Needs to lay off the late night tacos if you know what I mean. And while listening to her sing was tolerable, listening to her talk was inhumane. I guess it was worth seeing her get the boot one more time. Kinda fun watching her and Paula out crazy one another. Can we get on with the real talent, please?

More on AI

A few more thoughts . . .

The JoBros . . . entertaining. Boys trying to act like men, though. Bands like this tend to become a caricature of themselves. Only real talent will prevail. That may not be the case here.

Jimmy Kimmel isn't funny.

The Gladys Knight clip was good. Too long. But good.

I like George Michael. I think he has a tremendous voice. But talk about bringing down the mood. Geez.

All over the news there's shock at the Cook win. Like me, just about everyone expected Archuleta to win. Everyone also mentions the comments made by Simon the night before. See? Well?

David Cook Wins

Well, I hope my intuition doesn't doesn't reflect on my football picks this season or I'm in trouble.

I DVR'd the final last night as I went to my daughter's piano recital. Sorry to the two or three of you that may have stopped by looking for the live blog. A few thoughts:

First, these are adult, individual styled singers. They are not The Kids From Wisconsin. All the group singing was horrible . . . and stupid. That said, what ever drugs Paula is on Amanda is on more of them. What was her deal? She blew chunks. Large chunks. So did Jason. Looking back now it's amazing either one made it to the finals.

The women did much better than the men. Again, there's no good reason to do group songs but the guys really sucked. Amanda was a joke . . . embarrassing, really. Could be she and Jason really didn't want to be there. Still, have some integrity with your singing.

I thought Michael and Carly did very well. In fact, I think it was choice of song that did Carly in. She's better than Syesha.

Archuleta sang better than the singer for One Republic did. Yow.

Brooke with Graham Nash was extremely cool. My second favorite performance.

My third favorite was Carrie Underwood. Man she can sing. Her outfit sucked, though. Kinda weird and skanky at the same time. She doesn't have to do that.

The two highlights of the night . . . David Cook and ZZ Top. That was not only cool but a great performance. And, of course, Cook winning. I have to admit, I'm really surprised. I feel he deserved to win, but there just seemed to be an awful lot of Archy supporters out there. It will be interesting to see what happens now for both Davids.

With the reported record amount of votes cast, did Simon's "knockout" comment rally the Cook troops? We know he was pulling for Cook. Was it a calculated comment? There no way to know but it is interesting. The momentum seemed to be in Archueta's favor.

His dad probably beat him with his belt.

So . . . now what? Well, wait for Cook's first CD. And . . . Hell's Kitchen!

Paula's trancing

If you watched AI last night, you witnessed a paranormal event . . . Paula reported on two performances of Jason Castro, though he had only performed once! She must have been visioning into the future!

It was quite hilarious. Because the finalists were performing two songs, and the show was only an hour long, the judges waited on their commentary until all the performers had sung. This clearly threw Paula off. Even as others tried to explain to her that Jason had only sung once, she was confused. Everyone was a bit uncomfortable at that point. The simply had to move on. I don't think she ever got it. She tried to explain that it was her notes that had confused her . . . she was reading ahead from David Cook's performance notes. But, that didn't make sense as she came back to give David high praise as opposed to the lackluster judging she gave Jason's "apparent" second performance.

Look up "ditz" on Wiki and who's picture will be there?

Probably many. But Paula officially joins that list.

American Idol

I read a couple of things in the paper about AI that caught my interest. The first issue is the declining viewership. To me, that's easy . . .

GET ON WITH IT ALREADY!

They waste sooooo much time on that show. There's no reason for the show to be 90 minutes long once they reach the finals. There is so much filler crap it is hard to watch live. The only reason I watch live is because Dan at the D Spot live blogs it. Otherwise it's perfect for the DVR.

The other issue is the artist choice for songs. Beatles, Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey . . . ? Personally, I would prefer they just switch the genre each week to see how they do. Rock, Country, R&B, that sort of thing. Even then, I don't see why they just don't let the singers perform to their strengths. Kristi, who just got the boot, isn't going to become a pop star. She's country through and through. Same with Brooke. She's not about to become the next Pink. Why force them into situations they're not comfortable with? After all, since they gravitate to a particular genre, wouldn't you want to know that they bankable in that genre?

Lastly, there was an article that thinks the big prize is for Archuleta to lose. What? He's got a good voice. He does have broad appeal. But, give me a break . . . he's boring! Remember Clay Aiken? Exactly. In my opinion, and it's well seasoned in music, this year should belong to David Cook. Not only does he have a good voice, it's an interesting voice. Unique. A voice you could listen to for a while. I can't say that about Archie. Or any of the others, for that matter. Kristi will have some success as a country artist. But Jason, Syesha, and Carly . . . success? As what? Hard to say.

One thing is for sure, assuming the performers are actually voted on by the viewing public . . . there's no saying what will happen. Given the past record of voters, Archie may well win.

Too bad.

America Needs an Idol!

For the third week now, I've been less than impressed with the entire ensemble. First, what is it with the Beatles songs? Give it a rest. Let them sing what they want! Still, if you want to call yourself a singer, you gotta sing. No one is in a position of calling their own shots, yet.

On the other hand, why not let them play to their strengths?

Anyway, of the bunch, David Cook seems to have the most talent. He's got a Scott Stapp kind of voice and has pretty good stage presence. Amanda Overmyer thinks she's cool. She's not, and she's not that good. Kristi Lee Cook continues to disappoint. Carly Smithson continues to make bad choices with her songs. And Rami, Syesha, and Jason will likely advance on their looks.

More than that, Randy, Paula, and Simon are just annoying. Their commentary is worse than the performances. Simon is often right, in my opinion, but is such an asschute he diminishes the point of his comments. If I have to hear "check it out . . ." from Randy any longer I'll go insane. And Paula . . . trim your bangs!

David Cook should win it. He's been the most consistent and has the best natural talent. I think when allowed to finally let go, Carly could do well. Maybe Jason as well. But on a scale of 1 to 10, David's an 8. The rest are, at best, a 5.

BTW, Dan Deibert over at the D Spot live blogs the telecast. Check it out and join in. It's a lot of fun!

American Idol

I don't watch until the end when, supposedly, only the best are left. With respect to this year's crop of hopefuls . . . they suck. I'm not a huge Beatles fan to begin with but the decision to use their songs was . . . well, not good. If anything, it put many of the performers at a disadvantage as they really couldn't pull the song off very well.

It will be interesting to see who survives.
